Elisa Orth - Winner of the 2015 Women in Science Award.
Dr. Elisa Orth, a scientist from the Department of Chemistry at the Federal University of Paraná - UFPR, says that this is the second time that she is enrolled in the award and feels completely fulfilled with the achievement. Her study seeks to develop new catalysts that efficiently accelerate several classes of chemical reactions.
One potential is to obtain artificial enzymes that could be used to solve genetic problems - related to diseases such as cancer, fibrosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, among others. Another application interest is to destroy chemical substances harmful to human health, present in many pesticides still used in Brazil. I knew the award years ago and always wanted to be part of this group of scientists recognized by it ”, she declares. Read more: http://www.paramulheresnaciencia.com.br/
Scientia - Catalysts for toxic substances (18/04/16).
A group of scientists from the UFPR Chemistry Department studies catalysts in reactions involving organophosphates, toxic substances present in pesticides and chemical weapons. Researches develop, among several studies, ways to destroy chemical weapons and stocks of illegal pesticides, forms of genetic therapies and, even, ways to identify foodstuffs with pesticides at home.
