News in works and initiatives in favor of female scientists

The GCC participated in various activities at the 45th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society of Chemistry in Maceió (31/05-03/06)! In one of them, Prof. Elisa was invited to speak at the Catalysis session about "Functionalization on demand for catalysis: effects of support, coverage, group identity and neighboring" Results of work by Yane H. Santos (postdoc), André HG Martinez (SI), José GL Ferreira (PG), Willian Takarada (PG) and Mariana H. Nazareno (SI) were presented. With the collaboratin of professors Aldo Zarbin and Rilton Freitas.
In addition, GCC was also in the coordinated session of Organic Chemistry. The work"Novel lipophilic 2,4-D analogues by Ugi Reaction: synthesis and kinetic insights"presented by doctoral student Giuliana Pavaneli, supervised by Prof Caroline D'Oca from the Medicinal and Agrochemical Organic Synthesis Group (SOMA-UFPR), with the collaboration of the GCC: doctoral student Alex and Profª. Elisa assisted in the kinetic elucidation.
Profª. Elisa also participated in the organization of the symposium"Why should women scientists care about media visibility?", along with Rossimiriam Freitas and Carolina Andrade. The symposium had the participation of journalist Raíssa França (Maceió) and professors Juliana Fedoce (UNIFEI), Glaucia Gonzaga (UFF) and Anna Benite (UFG). This is one of the activities organized by the Women's Center SBQ, of which professor Elisa co-founded it (together with Rossimiriam Freitas) in 2019 and has actively participated in the coordination since then. This edition of RASBQ was also the first time that the event had the Espaço Família, offering a ball pool, microwave, sofas, painting material, assembly toys, etc.

New group article!

Check out the recent GCC publication regarding the selective bifunctionalization of graphene oxide in ACS Applied Nano Materials (impact index = 5,097). In this work, it was shown that a higher degree of functionalization is not always desirable: it must be "on-demand" depending on the application. Here for the neutralization of organophosphates, an interesting neighborhood effect was observed. The work is the result of Yane's thesis, which had IC André and the collaboration of Prof. Aldo Zarbin. Check it out at DOI

Valmir's thesis nominated to compete for the CAPES Thesis Award

The Graduate Program in Chemistry at UFPR (PPGQ-UFPR) chose Valmir's thesis to compete for the CAPES thesis Award. Valmir was part of the GCC, where he did his IC, master's and doctorate. The thesis chosen, entitled "Neutralization of organophosphate pesticides and analogues with imidazole derivatives: mechanistic elucidation in favor of chemical safety" yielded 8 articles, 1 book chapter and 2 patents. More important than these incredible indicators are the advances that this thesis has provided in terms of chemical safety. Good luck Valmir!
